Cisco Acquisition's History

Cisco is the market leader in almost all the market segments where they are present with few exceptions. They believe in the philosophy - "Be the market leader or get out of that segment". They are either number 1 or 2 in each market segments with few exception where they have just entered (Data center). Company with the market capitalization of over $100 billion, $40 billion in cash and approximately $ 40 billion revenue for FY-10. They have acquired over 100 companies till now with the first acquisition in 1993. Cisco believes in inorganic growth since their inception. Most of the acquisitions done by Cisco were strategic. They have acquired most of the companies before their IPO (Initial Public Offering). Company acquired each time they saw the opportunity to disrupt that market segments and they were successful except the acquisition of Scientific Antlanta which was  company's largest acquisition as of now for US$6.9 billion. Scientific Antlanta, a manufacturer of cable television, telecommunications, and broadband equipment. Company has really not performed well in this market. Cisco's TV set-top boxes were off 29% from a year before. (Source: Forbes) However there is an immense opportunity for everyone to play in this market. Cisco would like to capitalize on that in FY-11.

List of companies acquired by Cisco with the market opportunity: (Source: Cisco Acquisitions)
